MHyBus project news

The MHyBus project, co-funded by the European Program LIFE+, Environment Policy and Governance 2007 and implemented in the Italian Region Emilia-Romagna, in the period from January 2009 to December 2011, which aims at obtaining the authorisation necessary for one hydro-methane fuelled bus to circulate on public roads, is now almost a reality.

At the ENEA Casaccia Centre are carrying out the tests for engine optimization. Researchers at the Agency have tested the optimal parameters of performance: the best performance is obtained with the mixture of hydrogen and methane at a rate of 15% hydrogen. The results of this first trial were shared with other project partners that support the Region Emilia Romagna and ENEA: ATM Ravenna, Aster and the company Sol.

After this phase, the prototype will be taken in charge by the Istituto Motori of Naples for homologation tests, after which the Breda Menarini will mount it on a bus which will carry out road test in the territory of Ravenna, to obtain the overall approval.

The increased efficiency of the engine that uses this innovative fuel allows a greater reduction in CO2 emissions and improving overall energy consumption.
